What is the difference between KB and KiB?

1,000 MB in decimal, or 1,024 MiB in binary. Both conventions exist in practice.

Why do hard drives show less space than advertised?

Because manufacturers use decimal (1 GB = 1 billion bytes) while operating systems often report binary units.

How many bytes in a megabyte?

1,000,000 in decimal convention, or 1,048,576 in binary.

Convert a 3 GiB video file to decimal gigabytes. Since 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, the file is 3 × 1,073,741,824 = 3,221,225,472 bytes.
