How to Use This Tool

  • Select the shape of your original pan and enter its size (diameter for round, side for square, L x W for rectangle).
  • Do the same for the pan you want to use instead.
  • Optionally enter the original baking time to get a suggested new time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the area of a pan?

Round: π × (diameter ÷ 2)². Square: side × side. Rectangle: length × width. We do all of it for you.

Why does baking time change?

A bigger, shallower pan spreads the batter thinner, so it bakes faster. Time changes roughly with the square root of the area ratio, but always check for doneness with a skewer or thermometer.

Can I use a pan with a very different size?

Yes, but if the area ratio is far from 1 the depth changes a lot. Batches within ±25% of the original area behave best.

Does this work for any recipe?

Yes for cakes, brownies, sheet cakes and most batters. For bread or recipes that rely on a specific depth, adjust more cautiously.

Practical Example

Moving a recipe from a 9-inch round pan to an 8-inch round pan:

  • 9" round area: π × 4.5² = 63.6 in²
  • 8" round area: π × 4² = 50.3 in²
  • Factor: 50.3 ÷ 63.6 = 0.79 — multiply every ingredient by 0.79.
