Work Hours Calculator
Calculate your daily hours worked, including breaks — and your pay if you add an hourly rate.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter your start and end times, break length, and optional hourly rate. Works for day shifts and overnight shifts alike.
- If your break is paid, keep the checkbox on — no deduction.
- For timesheets, use the decimal hours figure (e.g. 8.5 hours).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my weekly hours?
Add your daily results across the week. Many payroll systems pay overtime beyond 40 hours in many regions.
What is decimal hours?
Hours expressed as a decimal instead of h:mm — 8 hours 30 minutes becomes 8.5. Most payroll software uses this.
Does it handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If the clock-out time is earlier than clock-in, the tool assumes the shift crossed midnight.
Is overtime included?
This is a single-day calculator. It doesn't apply overtime multipliers — check your local rules for weekly overtime.
Practical Example
A 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM shift with a 30-minute unpaid lunch is 7.5 hours: 8 hours minus the break. Work Monday through Friday and the week totals 5 × 7.5 = 37.5 hours. At $20 per hour, each day pays $150 and the week pays $750.
- Enter 09:00 to 17:00, a 30-minute break with the "Break is paid" box unchecked, and a $20 hourly rate to reproduce this result.
What Your Results Mean
- Hours worked — clock-out minus clock-in, minus the unpaid break, shown as hours and minutes (7 hr 30 min).
- Decimal hours — the same figure as a decimal (7.5), the format most payroll systems expect.
- Daily gross pay — hours worked × hourly rate before taxes and deductions; overtime multipliers are not applied.
