How to Use This Paycheck Calculator

Enter your annual salary, how often you are paid and your filing status. Optional pre-tax deductions (401(k), HSA, traditional IRA) come off before federal tax.

  • Biweekly — 26 checks a year, the most common US payroll cycle.
  • Semi-monthly — 24 checks a year, typically the 15th and last day.
  • FICA — Social Security 6.2% up to the wage base, plus Medicare 1.45% on all wages.

Practical Example

A single filer earning $65,000 in 2025, paid biweekly, with no pre-tax deductions:

  • Federal income tax ≈ $5,921 after the $15,000 standard deduction.
  • FICA = 6.2% + 1.45% = 7.65% × $65,000 ≈ $4,973.
  • Annual take-home ≈ $65,000 − $5,921 − $4,973 = $54,106.
  • Each of 26 paychecks ≈ $2,081.

What Your Results Mean

  • Net pay per paycheck — what typically hits your bank after federal tax and FICA.
  • Federal income tax — 2025 brackets with the standard deduction for your filing status.
  • FICA — employee share of Social Security and Medicare; the employer pays a matching amount.
  • Annual take-home — net pay across the whole year, before state tax and benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this include state income tax?

No. State and local taxes vary too widely. Subtract your state's rate from net pay for a closer estimate.

What is the Social Security wage base?

For 2025 it is $176,100. Social Security tax of 6.2% stops above that amount; Medicare of 1.45% does not.

How do 401(k) contributions change my check?

Traditional (pre-tax) 401(k) lowers taxable wages, so federal tax falls. Roth 401(k) is after-tax and does not reduce the federal line here — leave pre-tax at 0 for Roth.

Why is my real check different?

Withholding uses IRS tables and allowances, not the exact year-end tax. Health premiums, 401(k), garnishments and state tax also change the deposited amount.

Is Additional Medicare Tax included?

No. The extra 0.9% Medicare tax applies above $200,000 for single filers. Add it yourself if your wages exceed that threshold.
