Frequently Asked Questions
What is a MET?
MET stands for metabolic equivalent. One MET is the energy you use at rest; an activity with a MET of 8 uses eight times more energy.
How accurate is this estimate?
It is a good average based on the Compendium of Physical Activities. Your actual burn depends on fitness, intensity and body composition.
Why does weight matter?
Moving a heavier body requires more energy, so heavier people burn more calories doing the same activity for the same time.
Should I eat back exercise calories?
Generally no — estimates can overcount. Use exercise for a larger deficit unless you are actively trying to gain weight.
Practical Example
A 70 kg person running at 6 mph (MET 8.8) for 30 minutes:
- Calories: 8.8 × 70 × 30 ÷ 60 = 308 kcal
- That is about 10.3 kcal per minute.
