No. Only pictographic emoji and their modifiers are removed; common text symbols stay intact.
Why did spaces get left behind?
Emojis surrounded by spaces leave the spaces in place. If you also want to collapse extra spaces, run the text through a whitespace cleaner.
Does it handle skin-tone modifiers?
Yes — modifier characters that belong to an emoji are removed together with the base emoji.

Practical Example
Paste a sentence like Great job! followed by a thumbs-up emoji. After cleaning, the result is just Great job! — the pictograph is stripped while the text stays intact.
